If this doll has a name it is "Paddy". Her previous owner was a Church of England priest, one of the first women to be ordained. When Paddy died I inherited some of her liturgical materials including a lovely set of stoles and also this knitted priest. True to recent form as soon as Eliot saw the camera he took off to the dark corner where his basket lies so I was left with just the 'prop'.
Paddy lived in Sheffield and I'm guessing that she was a supporter of Sheffield United. If not then the football hat and scarf must have been a constant irritation. I don't support any team at all - maybe I ought to find some struggling team in a low division and throw my weight behind them? Perhaps not! I suppose I could find out something about Sheffield United and become a fan.....? It's something to think about.
Why do folk support football? I'd watch a bit of rugby but you'd never call me a "supporter". If I HAD to pick a team then it would probably be a schoolboy team from a Belfast school.... I'd support Kilkeel High hockey - but that's only because I used to play on the team and then later taught in the school. But why would a person support a totally unknown group of sports-people from a town or city that you've never visited....? It is one of life's mysteries.
As for a Woolly Priest - I try not to be. In an age when there are many uncertainties we need to preach a clear message and, with Easter round the corner, the resurrection hope is about as clear as it gets!
God our Father,
you have invited us to share in the supper
which your Son gave to his Church

Elizabeth, do not fear! Paddy is very obviously an Ulster supporter, wearing the red and white of Ulster rugby.
