Saint Philip and Saint James

1st May ... James the Less and Philip the Apostle are remembered today.  Both of them disciples and about them we know very little!
http://satucket.com/lectionary/Philip&James.htm     This site does a good job at sorting out which James is which!
Meanwhile ... the porridge is cooking nicely and being stirred with the spurtle.
 This is a Scottish kitchen tool designed since the fifteenth century for making porridge.  Usually carved at home from beechwood (with a thistle top) it is a useful piece of equipment.  This spurtle was a gift,
that gets used regularly.  The porridge oats are White's Organic Jumbo Oats ... they take longer to cook than some of those that are more refined ... but, in my opinion, the end product is well worth the waiting!
It gives me time to admire the spurtle as well!
To accompany the porridge ... a pot of coffee made from freshly ground beans!  The aroma is wonderful ... and the taste ... magnificent!  A good start to the day!

Almighty Father,
whom truly to know is eternal life:
Teach us to know your Son Jesus Christ
as the way, the truth, and the life;
that we may follow the steps of your holy apostles
Philip and James,
and walk steadfastly in the way that leads to your glory;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Glad to see the word spurtle in print again! My grandparents had one which got smaller and smaller over the years, leading us to believe it dissolved in the porridge and we ate it. MrsMcF

You learn something new every day - never heard of a spurtle and might have used it the wrong way up!
